Santander Funding – notes from funding event

Details:
Santander Funding – notes from funding event

Grants Manager – Alan Eagle alan.eagle@santanderfoundation.co.uk

Good News:
· No Deadlines – Funding runs from Jan to Dec, however none in Dec as Alan has to run year end in Nov, and best to get bid in before summer break before funding budget runs out!
· No Application Form – there is a cover sheet to make sure you haven’t missed anything off
· No Annual Reports or Accounts required – but they may check on Charities website to see accounts or Companies House for CUs
What they want:
· Write a letter
· Say how much you want & what it will buy
· How it will meet Santander’s priorities (Education & Training/Financial Capability)
· What long-term difference it will make
· Don’t mention any link to Santander as foundation will then have to jump additional hurdles to prove they have been impartial in assessing your bid

Last year 10,000 bids, only 250 accepted, likely to be 30,000 bids this year.
Up to £30K for Teesside and up to Sunderland on coast side of A19, up tot £10K all other areas.
Must benefit people in area you bid for, doesn’t need to be a new project or ‘innovative’, if you have a good ongoing project you can apply.
Must help disadvantaged people (not area!), not interested in ‘7th most deprived area’, give details of what you want to do and how it will help disadvantaged individuals.
Priorities:
1. Education & Training:
Doesn’t have to be formal education or lead to recognised qualifications, e.g. independent living skills, anger management, improving self-esteem, reminiscence work with older people, art & craft, IT classes.

2. Financial Capability:
Helping disadvantaged people to understand how to manage money – could include budgeting skills, accessing affordable credit.
It might help manage the challenges that arise from being a carer, unemployed, disabled, or through relationship breakdown.
E.g.: It might include funding the costs of running a credit union, projects delivering debt management advice, or helping people to understand their benefit entitlement. Might also include financial incentives to get people to undertake Financial Capability sessions or possibly increase CU membership – Santander would want to see some evidence that this has worked elsewhere.
In your letter be honest and realistic, don’t overpromise!
Types of funding available:
· Revenue: E.g.: Project Costs, Sessional Worker Costs, Volunteer Expenses
· Capital: Tangible items such as equipment, learning materials, or resources such as handbooks, worksheets, etc
· Won’t fund: Day trips, holidays, conferences, or contribution to large capital appeals, i.e. wouldn’t contribute to £2M building, or room in building, but might pay for equipment in one room that is used for your project. (Subscript – Santander want to say ‘we funded this’ and not ‘we funded part of this’) - more details on website.
Project money to be spent within 15 mths, and you will be required to provide the following at end of project:
· How much impact did the grant have?
· How many people have you helped? (broken down into groups, young, old, BME, etc.)
· Did Santander money help lever in any more funding?
